What Treatments are available for fungal skin and nail infections?
At Dun Laoghaire Foot Clinic, we offer a variety of treatments for fungal nail infections tailored to your needs:
Topical Treatments
These are applied directly to the nail and include amorolfine, tioconazole, and ciclopirox.
They work best in the early stages of infection, as they don't penetrate the nail bed. While they can be used over months or even years, the cure rates are low, ranging from 15% to 30%.
Oral Treatments
Oral medications like Terbinafine, Itraconazole, Fluconazole, and Griseofulvin are available through your GP.
While these treatments are more effective, they can have potential side effects, and liver function tests are often required before and during treatment.
Fenestration
This procedure involves creating small holes in the nail plate to allow antifungal solutions to directly reach the infection, helping to clear it as the nail grows.
There is ongoing research to assess the long-term effectiveness of this treatment.

What are the symptoms of a fungal nail infection?
Fungal nail infections cause the nail to thicken as the fungus beneath the nail plate prevents proper attachment to the nail bed. The infection typically starts at the free edge and spreads down the sides of the nail. In the early stages, the nail may develop a yellowish tint with white, powder-like lines. As the infection progresses, the nail can become discolored, ranging from yellow to various shades of brown.
