Verrucae are warts that appear on the soles of the feet, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can be painful, especially when walking or standing, and may spread if left untreated.
Dun Laoghaire Foot Clinic offers effective treatments tailored to your needs, and specialist care for persistent cases. Our expert podiatrists will help you manage and eliminate verrucae, restoring comfort and confidence in your foot health.
What are verrucae?
Verrucae, or plantar warts, are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which can survive on surfaces for extended periods and spreads through direct skin contact. These warts develop in the epidermis, a layer of skin without blood vessels, allowing them to evade the immune system and persist for long periods.
What are the symptoms of a verruca?
Verrucae often present as small, rough growths on the sole, sometimes with black dots (clotted blood vessels). They may cause pain or tenderness, particularly when walking or standing.
What treatments are available for verrucae?
For persistent, painful verrucae, needling can be a highly effective treatment. Verruca needling is done under local anaesthesia. A hypodermic needle is repeatedly punctured to puncture the verruca, pushing the infected tissue into the dermis and stimulating an immune response.
If multiple verrucae are present, typically only one needs to be treated. Once your immune system responds, all verrucae will typically resolve.
